FAQ
Which format should I choose for photographs?
JPEG or WebP are ideal for photographs. JPEG is universally supported with excellent compression. Use 80-90% quality for web use. WebP offers 25-35% smaller files than JPEG but older browsers may not support it. Avoid PNG for photos since it creates very large files.
When should I use PNG instead of JPEG?
Use PNG for images with transparency, logos, or graphics with text and sharp edges. PNG's lossless compression preserves every pixel exactly, preventing the blocky artifacts JPEG creates. The tradeoff is much larger file sizes. A PNG photograph might be 10 times bigger than its JPEG equivalent.
What makes AVIF special and should I use it?
AVIF achieves 50% smaller file sizes than JPEG at similar quality using AV1 video compression. It supports HDR and high bit depths. However, browser support is limited and older browsers cannot display it. Use AVIF for modern web projects with fallback images, but avoid it for maximum compatibility.
Why do my converted images look worse than the original?
Quality loss happens when converting from lossless (PNG) to lossy formats (JPEG, WebP) or using low quality settings. Each lossy compression cycle discards data permanently. To minimize loss, start with the highest quality source, use 90-100% quality settings, or choose PNG when quality matters most.
Can I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone?
Yes, this tool automatically handles HEIC formats used by iPhones. The tool first converts HEIC to JPEG, then applies your selected output format. This two-step process is needed because browsers have limited HEIC support. Some quality loss may occur, so use the highest quality setting.
