FAQ

What types of metadata can I view?

The tool extracts basic file information (name, size, type, checksums) from any file, plus specialized metadata like EXIF data from images (camera settings, GPS coordinates, timestamps), and embedded metadata from other file types when available.

Why would I want to view file metadata?

Viewing metadata helps you verify file integrity with checksums, understand file properties, check when and where photos were taken, learn camera settings, organize files, verify authenticity, and troubleshoot file issues.

What are checksums and why are they useful?

Checksums (MD5, SHA-256, SHA-1) are unique digital fingerprints calculated from file contents. They help verify file integrity - if a file changes even slightly, its checksum will be completely different. This is useful for ensuring downloads weren't corrupted and verifying file authenticity.

Can I see GPS location from any file?

GPS coordinates are only visible in files that contain location data, primarily photos taken with GPS-enabled devices. Most smartphones add GPS data automatically to photos, but other file types rarely contain location information.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No, all processing happens entirely in your browser. Your file is read locally using JavaScript, and the metadata is extracted without any network upload. Your files never leave your device, ensuring complete privacy.

Why do some files show no metadata?

Files may have no embedded metadata if they were created by software that doesn't add it, or if metadata was stripped during processing. Some file formats simply don't support embedded metadata. However, basic file information (name, size, checksums) is always available.
